Inside Thoughts

Should Seniors Have a Spirit Week?

In Mancelona High School, a student named Juliann Ray had the amazing idea of having a spirit week for seniors. Many of the seniors in the journalism class agree with the idea, stating they really like the idea of having a week all about them. Many students believe it should be the week of the seniors leaving. Having a spirit week for the seniors is a great idea because they can make their last few days in high school memorable and students and staff can celebrate their accomplishments with them.

Why would we do this? Many believe that if the school celebrates their accomplishments, it will help others want to graduate, try harder to get good grades, and graduate on time. We all know how senioritis works and how hard it can hit, and students think adding in a fun week will help them push to do better and try harder.

How would we accomplish this? Many students could be interviewed on their thoughts and it can be looked over by the principal to see what he believes would be okay. The questions asked to seniors and juniors are: “What do you think about having a spirit week before the seniors leave as a final good-bye?” “What days would you enjoy if this plan goes through?” “Do you want to do anything special if this plan goes through?” “Would you rather have the days before they leave for the week of them leaving?” “Would you want it to be the same as normal spirit weeks?” “If you are not okay with it, why?” “What would you change about this idea?” “Do you think that this would help increase senior participation?” “What are some activities you would like to do?” Journalism student Hannah Lang gathered the opinions of Aleczander Hoose, a senior and Skylynn Depeel, a junior. She asked these two students questions about what they think of the idea, and Alec says, “I think there’s no point in a third spirit week,” while Sky argues, “I think it'd be fun.” Many others who have heard of the idea agree that it’s a great idea. She also asked the interviewees if they thought that it would help with student participation and they argued again. Alec said, “No, because half of us don’t participate in it,” while Sky thinks otherwise, saying, “Yes, because I think that with another week full of fun more people will want to join in with the fun and have the last few days of school be fun. It gives students something to look forward to.” They were also asked about their favorite spirit week day, which is important. Many students don’t enjoy the days that were mentioned in the questionnaire. Many students believe that they need to have different days and more activities.  It’s hoped that students and staff will take this idea into consideration.

In conclusion, we believe that this idea should be talked about and put into thought for upcoming seniors. While many may not enjoy the idea of another spirit, many enjoy the idea, and we can thank Juliann Ray for her very creative idea.
